Operating a self-dumping hopper looks exciting. More importantly, it helps you move and dump materials without coming into contact with them. However, the forklift operator must operate the machinery safely to prevent damage and potential injuries. This video shows the steps involved in safely dumping the contents of your self-dumping hopper using a forklift.
1. Park and Mount/Dismount Safely
First, you must engage the parking brake before getting off the forklift and when lifting the dumpster. Also, when dismounting or getting into the forklift, ensure you have three points of contact with the machine. That is, either two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand.
2. Hook the Dumpster to the forklift
Most self-dumping hoppers come with chains that allow you to hook them to a forklift to prevent the dumpster from falling into the trash container or onto nearby objects. The best place to hook the dumpster chain is in the forklift’s master range. Additionally, lift the hopper before approaching the dumping container. Ensure the dumpster lines with the lips of the trash container to avoid crashing into the container.
3. Make Good Use of Your Parking Brakes
Every time you need to stop the forklift, whether to load the hopper or tip it over the dumping container, ensure that the parking brakes remain engaged. You do not want to have any “accidental” reversals when in the middle of a dump. You can now take the chain off and park the dumpster safely.
There you go. You can operate the self-dumping hopper in three simple steps. Don’t hesitate to reach out to local hoppers if you need help.
